Slide collecting isn't just about the slides. Once in a while a collection will arrive in one of these handsome old boxes, used to store up to a couple of dozen slide magazines. The magazines functioned as a dust-free archival storage solution, and they were also designed to fit perfectly into slide projectors that met the same specs. Few people actually use slide projectors anymore. This set of pictures shows a box which came from a smoking household. The box smelled rank, and unfortunately I had to get rid of it. Most of the slides images were in good enough shape but every slide smelled nasty. After scanning the slides I put the slides and the magazines in an air-tight drawer, and opening that drawer unleashes a nasty stink. Removing the slides from the metal wrappers was more difficult that usual, because the mustiness of the environment caused the slides to get caked on to the wrappers. That's why most of these wrappers are bent out of shape.
